Yogurt Substitute Considerations

We actually prefer the sour cream or buttermilk substitute when a baking recipe calls for yogurt, it's not quite as good for you of course but the texture is slightly lighter and there is a bit of a tasty tang to the finished baked goods. It works especially well with coffee cakes. But if making a fruit salad type recipe, we prefer the cottage cheese option when substituting for yogurt.

Remember, when making a yogurt substite be sure to measure accurately for best results. Some substitutes for yogurt (yoghurt) may alter slightly the taste, texture, weight, or moisture content of the finished product. Whether this is good, bad or indifferent depends on your tastebuds, but we've tried others and feel that these are the best alternatives in pinch for a yogurt substitute.
