My recipe calls for a shallot &#8211; what is a shallot?<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p><span class=\"dropcap1\">A<\/span><strong>nswer<\/strong>:<\/p>\r\n<p>Shallots are a vegetable within the onion family. Yet, they are shaped more like garlic &#8211; within a shallot bulb there are usually from 2-6 cloves. Avoid any shallots with dark spots, soft spots or sprouts. You want them dry to avoid the formation of mold. <\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Shallots can be eaten raw or cooked. They are readily available since they grow all year round.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>When using in a recipe, if one shallot is called for then you can generally use all the cloves within one bulb.
